Let’s dive in for some intriguing story ideas and writing prompts!
I hope the ideas below are original. However, undoubtedly with the popularity of this trope, something similar could have existed out there already. But the smallest details and execution matter, and make all the difference!

3. A small college town, a nerdy gamer, and a bet.
When a bet gone wrong has resulted in the death of the mascot of the college sport’s team, it’s up to a nerdy gamer to solve the murder and unmask the culprit.
4. A bike shop in a countryside, a visiting tourist, and a freak storm.
Due to a freak storm, a tourist’s itinerary and plan for the weekend are ruined. They take up the offer of a bike shop owner to take shelter in their shop. When a murder happens there, who’s the victim and who’s the culprit?
5. A quaint little inn, an aging actress turned innkeeper, and a busy weekend.

6. A picturesque little town on a cove, a nun, and a wedding party.
When an unexpected murder disrupts an intimate wedding rehearsal, no one expects that an unassuming nun steps up to unravel the dark secret hidden within the tranquil wall of the church.
7. A nearly abandoned mining town, a middle-aged bartender, and a poisoned patron.
The deserted mining sites has attracted a diverse group of individuals due to a newly discovered minerals within its mines. It’s almost no surprise when someone turns up dead. But the bartender of the only bar in town won’t have the scandal go unsolved and tarnish the history of his beloved home turf.
8. A “haunted” castle, a groundskeeper, and a horde of curious teens.
A castle’s haunted reputation has been a marketing gimmick that draws curious visitors for years. When someone turned up dead, the castle’s humble groundskeeper might be the only person level-headed enough to solve the case.
9. A quaint bookstore, a decade-old crime, and a dormant mastermind. A vintage bookstore owner stumbles upon a decade-old murder confession hidden within the pages of an old book. As she digs deeper, the mystery threatens to ruin everything she holds dear.
10. A ski trip, serendipitous meeting, and a partridge. A family’s annual ski trip turns into a nightmare when the patriarch is found dead in a ski-related accident, and the only clue is a partridge.

The Definition of Cozy Mystery
Now, let’s delve deeper into the genre!
Cozy mysteries, also known as “cozies,” are a subgenre of crime fiction that typically feature amateur detectives solving murders in small, idyllic communities.
Cozies are characterized by their focus on the personal relationships and daily lives of the characters, rather than graphic violence or explicit descriptions of crime scenes. They often take place in quaint, picturesque settings such as small towns or villages and include elements of humor, romance and a sense of community.
The detective is often an amateur and not a professional, and the crimes are often committed by someone known to the community, often with a closed circle of suspects. The emphasis is on the puzzle-solving aspect of the plot rather than the violence or gore commonly found in other crime fiction.
In this regard, cozies differ from hardboiled fiction, where the storyline typically centers around more violence and explicit sexuality.
Some of the best known examples of the genre are Agatha Christie‘s Miss Marple series (featuring the amateur detective Miss Jane Marple, a spinster who solves crimes in the fictional village of St. Mary Mead), Dorothy L. Sayers‘ Lord Peter Wimsey series (featuring the amateur detective Lord Peter Wimsey, an aristocrat who solves crimes in 1920s England), and Martin Edwards‘ Lake District series (featuring the amateur detective Hannah Scarlett, a solicitor who solves crimes in England’s Lake District.)
What makes a good cozy mystery story
Here are a few key elements that make a good cozy mystery story.
A charming setting with a strong sense of community is a must. A puzzling mystery with a lighthearted tone make a cozy mystery a comfort to read rather than a suspenseful story to pump the adrenaline.
Lastly, a focus on everyday life (i.e. characters doing day-to-day mundane activities) with an amateur sleuth as the main protagonist who’s typically smart (despite their amateurism), resourceful, and relatable, someone the reader can root for and learn from.
