The Definition of Mockumentary
Mockumentary is a portmanteau of mock and documentary, a type of film or television show which is a made-up documentary or docu-comedy portraying fictitious events presented as a historical documentary.
Characteristics
Mockumentaries are often supplemented with:
1. Fictitious footages (often shot with hand-held camera for a realistic flavor) interwoven into the main shot.
2. Interview sessions involving the characters.
3. Talking heads, or commentaries by related characters involving past events and such.
4. cinéma vérité or hidden camera scenes, which combines impromptu interactions with the use of camera to reveal any hidden truths.
Mockumentaries generally have a comedic undertone, and should not be confused with pseudo-documentaries, which are more dramatic in nature. Pseudo-documentaries should not be confused with docudrama, which is essentially a dramatic retelling of real events by employing various documentary elements. Moreover, a docudrama is different from docufiction, which is a documentary that is tainted with fictional elements.
What’s the purpose of mockumentaries?
What’s the purpose of mockumentaries, you ask?
Mockumentary’s purpose is to parody, or criticize, current events, mainstream culture and trends, society, choice of lifestyle, religion, and politics.
The finest example of the genre is believed to be This is Spinal Tap, a mockumentary where most of its dialogues was improvised, parodying the actions and musical pretension of rock bands as well as the hagiographic tendencies of rock documentaries.
