The Definition of Gothic Fiction
Now, let’s delve a bit deeper into the genre!
Gothic fiction is a genre of fiction that combines elements of horror, death, and the supernatural, often set in dark and eerie environments such as medieval castles or haunted houses.
It emerged in the late 18th century and became popular in the 19th century, with works such as Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and Edgar Allan Poe’s stories being considered classic examples of the genre.
Characteristics of gothic fictions
Gothic literature is characterized by its emphasis on atmosphere and suspense, and it often explores themes of guilt, madness, and the supernatural. All in all, here are some key characteristics of gothic fiction:
1. Atmosphere: dark and eerie, typically set in haunted castles, abandoned monasteries, or gloomy mansions.
2. Supernatural elements: ghosts, vampires, and other monsters, as well as supernatural powers, curses, and prophecies often make appearances in gothic fictions.
3. Melancholy: explores themes of melancholy, sadness, and death, often portraying characters who are tormented by their own emotions, sometimes to the point of being driven to madness by their own fears, obsessions, or traumatic experiences.
4. Terror: aims to evoke feelings of terror, fear, and horror, often using suspense and shock to create a sense of unease in the reader.
5. Romance: often explores the theme of forbidden love, often portraying a passionate and dangerous love affair between two characters who are separated by social or supernatural barriers.
6. Mystery: an atmosphere of mystery is typically found in gothic fictions, involving puzzles, secrets, and unsolved crimes that are left for the reader to decipher.
Gothic vs. horror
Gothic literature and horror are related but distinct genres. Horror as a genre has a longer history, stretching back to ancient folklore and legends, while gothic literature only emerged in the late 18th century.
Gothic literature focuses on dark and eerie atmosphere and suspense, exploring themes of death, the supernatural and guilt, and its stories often feature elements of horror and the macabre.
Horror as a genre, on the other hand, focuses on evoking fear, terror, and revulsion in the reader or viewer. Horror can take many forms, including supernatural horror (such as ghosts and vampires), psychological horror (such as the fear of the unknown), and slasher horror (such as serial killers).
